Trainer backs Hackitt Review

Xact welcomes the recommendations of Dame Judith Hackitt’s independent review Building a Safer Future which has called for a Joint Competent Authority (JCA) to be created to ensure competence in those responsible for building safety.

The report has also recognised that a competence framework specifically for higher risk residential buildings (HRRBs) should be developed to ensure safety is not compromised by a lack of skills, knowledge and experience in those engaged in managing any part of a building’s life-cycle.

The Government commissioned the report following the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy in June 2017 in which 71 people died.

Dame Judith’s Final Report highlights a current disjointed approach which “allows individuals to practise without a requirement for competence to be assessed, accredited or reaccredited”.

Xact has pledged to continue working to deliver high quality training in line with current and future national standards.

Operations Manager Trevor Norwood said: “The Grenfell Tower Fire was a national tragedy and our thoughts remain with those affected.

“We welcome the call for improved competence in those charged with a responsibility for fire safety in HRRBs and we will do all we can to contribute via our training programmes in helping to prevent a fire of this magnitude occurring again.

“Our courses have already been updated to reflect the conclusions of the Dame Judith’s findings.”
