RIPA - Designated Person - Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000

Target audience

Managers who authorise the obtaining of communications data.

Aim

To enable delegates to lawfully authorise the obtaining of communications data in accordance the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000.

Outcomes

To enable delegates to:

  • Understand the technology and procedures for basic mobile, fixed line telephony, internet, email and postal services
  • Understand the relationship with the Data Protection Act 1998 and the Criminal Procedures and Investigations Act 1996 in relation to acquired communications data
  • Consider the operational impact of current legislation, policies and procedures

  • Evaluate the application process taking account of necessity, proportionality and collateral intrusion
  • Monitor and review authorisations
  • Discuss the cancellation procedure
  • Apply the correct criteria for authorisations in practical situations
  • Understand the role of the Surveillance Commissioners Office
