The Telecommunications (Lawful Business Practice)(Interception of Communications) Regulations 2000

These apply to the ability of organisations to lawfully intercept, record and monitor all use made of electronic communications in their control.

  • define the process for requesting similar data from other organisations
  • describe the data available from Internet, phone, and email transactions
  • understand how to read this data to further an investigation
  • describe how to use open source methods to identify destination and origin information from IP address and "contacted" number information
  • identify opportunities to use RIPA acquisition of communications data to further enquiries
  • understand how to open full headers on emails using email software to identify sender or recipient Internet Service Provider, IP address and or website
  • understand spoof email headers and how to trace sender details
  • understand how to capture and evidence findings

Delivery method

The sessions will be delivered using PowerPoint presentations, flipchart explanation, group discussion, individual tuition and practical exercises using computors to reinforce the course outcomes
