Online social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Bebo and blogs contain vast amounts of information about individuals, posted by themselves or others.

Investigators from all types of public authorities and private investigations are increasingly viewing this information as part of investigations.

This course is designed to assist investigators to comply with relevant legislation and Human Rights, while effectively obtaining and using information

Aim

To enable delegates to conduct effective and ethical internet investigations of individuals

Outcomes

Delegates should be able to:

  • Understand what information is available
  • Use search engines and network site query tools effectively
  • Evaluate, develop and manage information obtained
  • Understand Human Rights Articles 6 & 8, and record and discuss privacy issues, necessity and proportionality
  • Understand what is ‘freely available’ and what might constitute surveillance
  • Comply with RIPA surveillance and CHIS authorisation where appropriate
  • Handle personal information in accordance with Data Protection Act
  • Develop information to an evidential standard suitable for evidence to be used in interviews and hearings
  • Use CPIA sensitive and non-sensitive disclosure process in criminal investigations to manage methodology and acquired information
