Witness interviews

This course deals with the conduct of witness interviews through to the construction of witness statements for use in court or any tribunal or hearing.

Delegates have the opportunity to complete their own witness statement during the training which addresses relevant legislation and case law.

Target audience

All investigators who interview witnesses and are themselves likely to be required to produce a witness statement for evidence

Aim

To enable delegates to conduct ethical and effective witness interviews

Course outcomes

On course completion, delegates should be able to:

  • manage vulnerable and at-risk victims and witnesses appropriately
  • use appropriate communication and questioning styles
  • keep a written record of the interview
  • understand the cognitive approach to witness interviews
  • include comments and exhibits appropriately in a witness statement
  • explain criminal procedure rules and witness caution
  • identify hearsay evidence and understand rules in relating its use
  • understand the difference between fact and opinion
  • determine the difference between a witness, a professional witness and an expert witness
  • compile a structured witness statement
