Additional skills for experienced PACE interviewers

Designed for investigative interviewers who are already practitioners in interviewing suspects in accordance with the Police and Evidence Act 1984 Codes of Practice, this course explores topics such as pre-interview disclosure and dealing with pre-prepared statements.

It also focuses on introducing large volumes of evidence and managing “no comment” and difficult interviewees.

The workshop style of training allows delegates to share experiences and identify best practice.

To extend the skills of those engaged in PACE suspect interviews

Course outcomes

On course completion, delegates should be able to:

  • deal appropriately with a request for pre-interview disclosure
  • link a pre-interview disclosure plan to the interview plan
  • identify interview objectives and plan for a PACE interview
  • understand the law in relation to adverse inferences
  • manage production of pre-prepared statements
  • manage third parties such as solicitors, interpreters and appropriate adults
  • use Special Caution when appropriate
  • identify unfairly obtained evidence and unreliable confessions (Sections 76 & 78 PACE)
  • conduct a structured interview using conversation management model
  • introduce exhibits and other information correctly
  • manage complex interviews that might include large volumes of exhibits and information
  • identify value of charts and timelines
  • deal with ‘no comment’ and difficult interviewees
  • use a variety of questioning styles
  • relate process to proving offences and Article 6 Right to Fair Trial
